Can Google Bankrupt America?

Everyone knows that Google is one of the most powerful search engines, providing mostly relevant search results and definitely better results than any other search engine out there. But, what are the chances that this mega search engine could possibly cause a recession or even worse an all-out depression?

I’m a marketing manger and handle hundreds of accounts for clients – this week, as I was checking on the status of several of my larger clients, it dawned on me that if Google, for whatever reason, were to drop listings (remember the Florida update?) the companies would be bankrupt in a matter of hours. Most of my clients generate between 40% and 80% of their monthly revenue from online sales – what if that went away? I don’t think there are many companies that could survive that sort of loss.

These companies are not just small private companies that spend a lot in advertising – they are large, publicly traded corporations that employ thousands of people. Not only would there be a financial crisis but think of what it would do to the unemployment rate?

While I still think Google is the best solution when it comes to online marketing, I do believe they have enough power to send this country into financial ruin with the switch of an algorithm.

What do we do about this? Probably nothing except pray this never happens.

Any thoughts on this?
