Social Media - Recipe For Disaster?
As I was updating my profile on MySpace, I noticed that I had requests waiting from people that want to be part of my circle of friends. Well, as usual, there was a lot of spam in the requests - you know the stuff, requests from porn sites, discount watch scams, etc.
Well, in this last batch was a legitimate request from a young man looking to break into the website marketing industry. Not a problem, I like to mentor people when possible but when I looked at his profile, I was amazed at the stuff he is telling people about himself. Things that most people would be ashamed of were listed in his profile.
This was enough to prevent me from wanting to add him to my circle of friends - if it offends me this bad, what about potential clients he may get for his website marketing business? What if web marketing doesn’t pan out for him and he end up getting some corporate job - what would they say if they saw this?
Honestly, I think that Social Media is a great tool but we need to be careful of the type of information we share with people. If your favorite hobby is base-jumping with nothing more than your birthday suit, you have a thing for ladies feet or you really enjoy some other “socially unacceptable” behavior - great but Don’t Post It. Someday, someone is going to find that and it may hurt your chances of landing that perfect client or securing your dream job.
Seriously, be careful of what you post on social media sites - they can be as powerful as a credit report.
